Sterling Mansion Education Plan

Several educational programs are planned.

1. Tours and Museum:  Upon acquisition the house will be furnished and opened for tours.  Each tour will offer a narration on the history of the mansion and will be of educational value.  Student groups, including school field trips, will be encouraged. Texas history will also be addressed during the tours and within the museum. The fourth grade social studies curriculum mandates the study of Texas history, as reflected in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

As stated in the business plan, a museum is planned for Ross Sterling’s original study. Story Sloane III will be creating the museum using 1920s and 1930s photographs in his South Dairy Ashford studio. Additional artifacts will be incorporated, along with items donated by the Sterling family. A member of the Sterling family has volunteered to help create the museum. The museum will reflect local history, Texas history, and Ross Shaw Sterling and his legacy.

2.  Gardens:  The original Sterling Mansion gardens will be restored, along with the original fountains and reflection pool. A professional landscape artist that specializes in historically appropriate landscaping will be invited to plan and layout the beds. Native Texas plants will be incorporated where possible. These plants are colorful and provide food and shelter to local wildlife. They are also designed to survive in this climate and are low maintenance. Many people picture bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush when the phrase “native plants” is mentioned. Educational workshops will be provided in an effort to educate people regarding the usefulness and diversity of these plants.

3.  Bay:  The Sterling Mansion sits on six acres located along the bay. It is hoped children can be offered educational workshops regarding marine life and their habitats during weekends, holidays and summers. It is also hoped similar workshops can be offered that include fishing lessons. Science concepts reflected in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be addressed during the workshops.

* Preserved in Time will encourage local organizations, such as the Morgan’s Point Historical Association, to hold their meetings at the Sterling Mansion.
