Step into the Past: A Roaring Twenties Murder Mystery

Celebrating the Legacy of Governor Ross S. Sterling (1931-1933)

Born near Anahuac, Texas in 1875, Ross Shaw Sterling’s road to fortune started in 1910 when he purchased two oil wells which later became the Humble Oil and Refining Company (Exxon). Prior to becoming the governor of Texas from 1931 – 1933, Mr. Sterling commissioned architect Alfred C. Finn to design the 21,000 square foot structure which was completed in 1927. Architect Alfred Finn is also noted for his work on the nearby San Jacinto Monument. Reportedly the largest residence in Texas when it was completed, the Sterling Mansion replicates the façade of the nation’s presidential home, but at two-fifths the size. The Sterling Mansion is currently listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. It was listed on the National Register in 1982. The present owners, Jim and Janet Pyle, have offered the historic Sterling Mansion as a venue for this year’s entertaining event.

Following a greeting and historical overview given by your hosts, Lieutenant Columbo will take you back to a time when the most cunning detectives thrived. Mingle with the great fictional detectives of the 1920s as they study the clues and the suspects from Clue, and solicit your help in solving the evening’s “whodunit.” Follow Miss Jane Marple, Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, Sherlock Holmes, and Nick and Nora Charles as they move from room to room listening to Sterling family stories and gathering clues.

The evening will feature a buffet dinner catered by Grand Finale, a cash bar, a historical tour of the ground floor, and a silent auction. Tickets are $100.00 per person and can be purchased below. Space is limited, and tickets will not be available at the door.

The food and entertainment received during the event is equal to or greater than the price of the tickets. Participation in the actual murder mystery is optional.
